Jospin tries to justify his statements
Lebanon-France, Politics, 2/26/2000

In an attempt to eliminate the adverse impact of his statements, the French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin, who justified Israel's aggressions against the infrastructure in Lebanon and described it as a reaction to operations carried out by the Lebanese national resistance which he considered as terrorists said today that his policy concerning Lebanon is identical to the main principles on the ground of which the French policy is run.

In a statement before a group of students at Beir Zeit Palestinian university in the West Bank, Jospin stressed that France condemns the presence of the Israeli forces in Lebanon and Israel's occupation of South Lebanon.

However, Palestinian demonstrators threw stones at Jospin as he left the university and one press photographer was hit as a result.

The students raised banners against the French Premier in which is written: "We are not terrorist Mr Prime Minister. The Lebanese resistance men are not terrorists. The real terrorists are those who are killing our children daily and destroy the infrastructure of the Lebanese people."

Meantime, the Beir Zeit university today presented an official apology to the French Prime Minister, his government and to the French people following the aggression against Lionel Jospin at the premises of this Palestinian university in the West bank.

In a statement circulated on the press the university said that its teaching staff, employees and students express their strong condemnation to this regrettable incident and described it as a violation to the spirit of tolerance, democracy and dialogue embodied in " our university."
