Sheik Mahfuz Nehnah: Terrorists' refusal for civil reconciliation is due to lack of confidence in the president and their horrible crimes
Algeria, Politics, 2/26/2000
Sheikh Mahfuz Nehnah, head of the Algerian Movement of a Peaceful Society, stated that the civil rapport made by Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika will not work unless promoted to handle terrorism.
In an interview with ArabicNews.com, Sheikh Nehnah, who is currently visiting Cairo, said that, "The treatment must be intellectual, legal, security, economic and social until things go according to man's nature," warning that if civil reconciliation was not accompanied by an intellectual reconciliation immediately, "The phenomenon of terrorism will be renewed from time to time."
He urged the Algerian officials, especially in information, to benefit from Egypt's experience in tackling violence and terrorism through the use of information.
He explained the refusal by a terrorist group of the civil rapport law as being due to lack of confidence in the republic's presidency and the civil community because they are afraid that the government will take revenge on them for the massacres they have committed.
He said that if there is a lack of confidence between the ruled and the ruler, then the rejection to reconciliation and rebellion will remain, asserting that there are a lot of parties in Algeria who do not want stability and security because they benefit from instability, and that 155 Imams and more than 70 journalists were killed and that the Movement of a Peaceful Society lost more than 455 fighters and 35 women, saying that revolt was comprehensive and that confrontation was against the whole people.
He accused the security bodies of committing misdeeds under pressure, saying that the terrorists in Algeria are heading toward their downfall, as for this is terrorists' destiny all over the world, yet he refused to determine a date for the end of terrorism in Algeria.
Concerning the developments and the Arab normalization with Israel, he said, "An external power wanted to create a problem for Algeria through Mauritania's recognition of Israel's state, despite of (Mauritania) not needing this recognition." He added that this recognition is a "pin in Algeria's body" to push it toward normalization with Israel and a provocation to the Arab states who did not pay a dollar to Mauritania. "I say to Mauritania, your recognition with Israel will not do you any good," Nehnah said.
He emphasized that the issue of Jerusalem will not be closed and if closed by the Arab rulers, the people will not abandon their rights and will not put down the weapons.
