El-Bashir affirms legislation and Taha declares the possibility of separating between religion and state
Sudan, Politics, 2/26/2000

Sudanese President Omar El-Bashir affirmed his adherence to applying Islamic legislation in Sudan.

El-Bashir's statements coincided with the declaration of Ali Ossman Taha, the Sudanese vice president, concerning "separating between the religion and the state."

This came in El-Bashir's address before hundreds of youths before moving to the fighting places in southern Sudan.

The Sudanese vice president has said that his country is ready to discuss separating between the state and religion with the rebels in the south.

Sudanese Foreign Minister Mustafa Othman Ismael referred to the government's ratification that the citizens' duties and rights cannot be based on religion, saying that the government ratifies that the citizen and their capacity are two items controlling rights and duties.
