Arab Parliamentary Union calls for common Arab market
Regional, Politics, 2/24/2000
The Arab Parliamentary Union (APU), which held its 9th congress in Algiers earlier this week, called Arab governments to materialize the projected creation of a common Arab market and an Arab free trade area.
The congress, which adopted a set of resolutions, underlined the importance of regional groupings in facing up globalization challenges and called for holding an Arab summit as soon as possible to examine the "delicate" situation the Arab world is going through.
It expressed hope that Arab governments would institute the Arab summit as a permanent forum that would hold regular meetings.
Regarding the situation in the Middle East, the APU congress called Arab governments having ties with Israel to suspend all normalization moves and to stop any dealings with Israel and to close down bureaux and missions to compel Israel to abide by the principle of the land-for-peace and provisions of international accords.
The congress likewise called the United Nations to force Israel sign the nuclear weapons non-proliferation treaty and to open its nuclear facilities to international checks.
