Arab League to meet in Beirut in support of lebanon
Lebanon-Regional, Politics, 2/23/2000

In a first initiative of the kind, the Arab League has chosen to hold its ministerial council next March 12-13 in Lebanon to support the host country in the face of Israeli raids.

The Arab League Secretary General, Esmat Abdul Meguid, announced on Wednesday that Lebanese Premier, Salim Hoss, called him on the phone and said his country welcomes the pan-Arab organization proposal to hold the meeting in Beirut, rather than the normal venue of Cairo.

Lebanon faced this Feb.7 and 8 massive air raids conducted by the Israeli army which destroyed electric facilities and left damages estimated at more than $ 40 million.

Israeli aggressions against Lebanon will be the main topic on the agenda of this ministerial council which will try to adopt a unified stance to politically and morally support Lebanon, said Abdul Meguid.

This is the first time that the 22-member organization holds a meeting outside Cairo since the Arab League was re-located in 1990 in Egypt after 11 years in Tunis.

In Algiers which hosted the ninth congress of the Arab parliamentary union (APU), the lebanese parliament called Arab parliamentarians to exert all possible pressures on Arab governments and leadership to further support the Lebanese people against the Israeli attacks.

Speaker of the Lebanese parliament, Nabih Berri, said "the best thing that Arabs could offer to Lebanon at this time was the reinforcement of unity."
