Yemeni official refuses US mediation on border demarcation with Saudi Arabia
Yemen-Saudi Arabia-USA, Politics, 2/21/2000

The chairman of the Yemeni reform party (Hizbul Islah), Abdullah Hussein al-Ahmar, on Sunday announced his opposition to an American mediation in the border dispute between Saudi Arabia and Yemen.

AFP quoted Sheikh al-Ahmar as saying in a statement to the United Arab Emirates al-Itihad daily as saying, "I do not prefer to have the US having any role between Yemen and Saudi Arabia because what we have linked to relations of fraternity and brotherhood does not require the interference of America or any other."

Al-Ahmar, who presided over the Yemeni Parliament, added, "I see that if the United States interferes in any matter of concern to the Arab nation, it will spoil it."

The US under secretary of state for Middle East and North African affairs, Edward Walker, stressed on Monday in Sanaa that his country is ready to help Yemen and Saudi Arabia settle their disputes.
