Khartoum criticizes Washington's decision to impose embargo on Sudanese petroleum companies
Sudan-USA, Politics, 2/19/2000
Sudan criticized yesterday US decision to impose economic sanctions on the national Sudanese company for petroleum.
Sudanese Foreign Minister Mostafa Othman Ismael related the decision to the Canadian government's non-response to Washington's demand to impose sanctions on one its companies working in petroleum production in Sudan.
The Canadian company is considered the only Western company to help Sudan extract petroleum.
The Sudanese foreign minister asserted that his country will not be affected by these sanctions, clarifying that the complete economic embargo on spare parts for the railway stations which transport rescue supplies between Khartoum and the south will not be affected, referring to the possibility that the Sudanese petroleum company can get its necessary technology from Europe, Asia and other countries.
Othman Isamel also said any visit by US envoy Harry Johnston to Sudan must tackle bilateral relations between the two countries as being the basis for any US deal with the relief issues and human rights.
