Egypt calls upon advanced countries to honour pledges
Egypt-Regional, Economics, 2/17/2000

Egypt anew called upon advanced countries to deliver on their pledges towards the developing countries as cited in the agreements reached during Uruguay round of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

This came in remarks made by Mounir Zahran, Advisor to Foreign Minister and member of the Egyptian Delegation to the 10th UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), currently in session in Bangkok, commenting on a speech made by the WTO Director General Mike Moore.

Zahran warned that if those pledges are not honored it would be very difficult for the developing countries to probe any new topics inside the world organization.

He underscored the need for the WTO to give top priority to this question, voicing hope that political determination would be available to achieve this goal through consultations being conducted by Moore with member-states in a bid to resume multilateral negotiations after the failure of Seattle conference to address application problems.

"Putting into consideration of the developing countries is a condition to restore confidence in the new world trade order," he said, reiterating the necessity to carry out all rules, agreements and resolutions reached within Uruguay round of talks.

"The developing countries are capable of defining what is in their interests and what is not," he stressed.
