Woman in Qatar gets the right to be lawyer for the first time
Qatar, Politics, 2/17/2000

The Qatari authorities have for the first time given a woman the right to practice law in Qatar, according to the Qatari daily al-Sharq on Wednesday.

The paper added that the committee in charge of accepting lawyers has approved a request proposed by Haifa al-Baker before the year 1989 and did not receive a reply in this regard from the Qatari officials.

The paper added that this woman renewed her request this year but this time asked for the backing of the ruler of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad Bin Khaleifa al-Thani.

Al-Baker told al-Sharq that her task as a woman will not be easy, saying that she has the will for maintaining success and that she is intending to establish her own private office.

Women in Qatar voted for the first time during the municipal elections in March 1999, but none of the six women candidates won in the elections.
