London denies links to aggressions against Gaddafi
Libya-UK, Politics, 2/16/2000
The Libyan authorities on Monday summoned the British ambassador to Tripoli, Richard Dalton, and informed him of Libya's request to participate with London in the investigations into the "conspiracy" which targeted Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi in 1996.
The Libyan news agency said that this move came after "new documents have surfaced assuring the involvement of the British intelligence in the conspiracy."
Immediately, British Foreign Minister Robin Cook reacted to the information which was published by the British Sunday Times, saying that "the British government had not definitely taken part in any aggression that targeted the assassination of Gaddafi in 1996."
He added in a statement to the BBC, "I know that the former British FM did not permit a similar assassination attempt, and that the foreign intelligence MI6 absolutely did not submit such a proposal for an assassination attempt. And I, since assume this office had not seen any member indicating that all these systems are interested in an adventure (of assassinating Gaddafi) as such."
According to the Sunday Times, the British intelligence was informed at the beginning of 1996 that an attack took place against the Libyan leader.
