Baghdad denies Tehran's accusation of backing Mujahidi Khalq
Iraq-Iran, Politics, 2/16/2000

Iraq has refused Iranian accusations which state that Baghdad backs Mujahidi Khalq movement, the armed opposition movement against Tehran which has recently carried out several explosions in the Iranian capital.

This was expressed in an official memorandum handed over by the Iraqi Foreign Ministry to the Iranian charge d'affairs in Baghdad, which also noted that having Iranian opposition groups carrying out acts against the Iranian authorities is an Iranian issue, and Iraq has deliberately no connection to it.

The memorandum added that the government of Iraq expressed its strong regret that the government of Iran has protested against Iraq at the time when Iran gives political and media coverage as well as material support to acts of destruction carried out by the Iraqi opposition and takes of Iran a headquarters for its works and activities.

The memorandum calls on Iranian officials to stop addressing accusations to Iraq under groundless pretexts. It stressed that any aggression against the Iraqi territories under any pretext will be deterred.

On Monday, Iran had officially asked Iraq to stop sheltering Mujahidi Khalq, "otherwise normalization of relations with Iraq will be impossible."
