Mubarak honors Egyptian peacekeepers
Egypt, Politics, 2/15/2000

President Hosni Mubarak yesterday attended an army ceremony to honor Egyptian peacekeepers who returned home from Central African Republic. During the ceremony, President Mubarak, the Supreme Commander of the Egyptian Armed Forces, was briefed on the peacekeeping stints undertaken by the Egyptian army around the world, including Somalia and Bosnia.

Egypt is now participating with monitors and liaison officers in several countries of the world, including Yugoslavia, Mozambique and Croatia. Also honored during the ceremony were an Egyptian rescue team dispatched to Turkey last August in the aftermath of a killer earthquake there. During their mission in Turkey over the period from August to December, the Egyptian rescue team took part in activating the search for victims of the quake and render emergency treatment to the injured. They set up two field hospitals and accommodation camps for the shelterless.

In his report, the chief of the army operations department said that Egypt is figuring prominently among the countries actively participating in international peacekeeping tasks. President Mubarak conferred medals on some members of the Egyptian peacekeeping force in Central African Republic and the rescue team who came back from Turkey. The ceremony was attended by senior state officials including Prime Minister Atef Ebeid, Defense Minister Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi and top army commanders.

President Mubarak also opened a museum of the Third Egyptian Field army. The museum showcases the weaponry used by the corps during the 1973 War and samples of the Israeli armaments captured by the Egyptian army during that war. Following his inauguration of the museum, Mubarak inspected the items on display.
