Inhabitants of Golan clash with the occupation troops
Syria, Politics, 2/15/2000

The Israeli occupation troops clashed with inhabitants of the Syrian Golan who protested against Israel's attempts to impose its citizenship on them after its declaration of annexing the Golan to Israel in 1981.

The youths participating in the demonstrations clashed with the occupation troops.

The Syrians on the liberated side also organized a similar peaceful demonstration on the anniversary of the annexation of the Golan by Israel, in which students from the occupied Golan, officials of the ruling Baath Party and well as of al-Qunaytirah governorate participated.

The participants demanded the return of the occupied Golan completely to the June 4, 1967 borders.

At least six Syrian citizens were wounded by the Israeli occupation forces. AFP reported that five Syrian citizens from the occupied Syrian Golan were on Monday hit by the Israeli occupation forces' gunfire during confrontations in Majdal Shams town.

Majdal Shams town, the largest in the occupied Golan witnessed a large demonstration in which thousands of people from the Golan took part. The demonstrators stressed their opposition to the Israeli occupation and adherence to their Syrian identity.

They raised Syrian flags and pictures of Syrian President Hafez al-Assad and chanted slogans condemning the decision of the Israeli Knesset to annex the Golan.

The Israeli Knesset announced the annexation of the occupied Golan on December 14, 1981. Two months later, Israel tried to impose the Israeli identity on the people of the Golan.
