Italy to receive 3,000 Moroccan immigrants this year
Morocco-Italy, Politics, 2/15/2000
Italy has decided to receive in the course of this year 3,000 Moroccan immigrants, under a law on non-European migration flows, said Italy's ambassador to Morocco, Guido Martino.
In a press briefing, the Italian diplomat said in setting the quota, Italy has taken into account its friendly relations with Morocco and the Moroccan authorities' active cooperation in fighting illegal immigration.
He explained that to be eligible to legal migration to Italy, candidates must produce a work contract or a guarantee by an Italian national or an Italian-based company and wait for the green light of the Italian authorities.
After he recalled that a group of 23,000 Moroccans obtained legal stay documents last year, he added that in addition to the 160,000 Moroccans already legally settled in Italy, some 14,000 others will be authorized to join their relatives.
The Moroccan community settled in Italy is the largest foreign community. According to the Moroccan exchange office, they repatriated to Morocco between January and September 99 $143,000, or 10.2 % of remittances of Moroccans settled abroad during the period.
