Morocco concerned over expatriates' situation in el ejido
Morocco-Spain, Politics, 2/14/2000

Morocco on Saturday expressed deep concern over the situation of the Moroccan community in El Ejido. Moroccan Secretary of State for cooperation, Aicha Belarbi, who visited El Ejido (a small farming locality in southeastern Spain) to inquire about the situation of the Moroccan expatriates, deplored the dismal living conditions and the difficulties facing Moroccan workers, who live in suburbs near their work place.

Moroccans settled in the Andalucian locality, near Almeria, were prey to terrorist acts Monday night in retaliation to the murder of a Spanish woman allegedly by a mentally-disturbed Moroccan. Some 52 Moroccans were seriously injured and 17 arrested during the clashes.

In her meetings with the Moroccan community, Aicha Belarbi assured the expatriates that the Moroccan government will do its best so that the Spanish authorities fulfill their promises to improve their lots.

Aicha Belarbi also met the delegate of the Spanish government in Andalusia, who said that Madrid accepted in principle the payment of compensations to the victims and that urgent measures are being taken to accommodate Moroccan immigrants.

Moroccan workers decided to resume strike until their demands are satisfied. They have observed a three-day strike which entailed losses worth 2 billion pesetas per day for the Spanish farmers.
