AL chief in Germany
Regional-Germany, Politics, 2/14/2000

In a pre-departure statement to Germany in Cairo on Sunday Arab League Secretary General Esmat Abdul Meguid stated that his talks with high-ranking German officials will concentrate on the developments of the grave and deteriorated conditions in the Middle East which he said come as a result of the Israeli persistence to destroy peace opportunities through repeating its aggressions against Lebanon and its economic and civil services establishments.

Abdul Meguid added that Israel evades its obligations and the requirements of a just and comprehensive peace, a matter which led to a stalemate in the negotiations on the Syrian and Palestinian track, where Israel also escapes the implementation of agreements signed with the Palestinians.

The AL chief called on the European states and the UN Security Council to pressure Israel to halt its aggressions and raids against Lebanon and bombardment of Lebanon's infrastructure.

Abdul Meguid's visit to Germany comes at the invitation of German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer. It is of great importance as it coincides with the upcoming meeting of the AL foreign ministers' council.

Discussions of the AL ministerial council will address Israel's development of its nuclear capacities and Germany's agreement with Israel to provide it with three advanced submarines of " Dolphin" type which is able of carrying missiles of nuclear spearheads. Israeli has so far received one submarine.
