Al-Sharaa gets a telephone call from Cook
Syria-UK, Politics, 2/12/2000

Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa on Friday evening received a telephone call from British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook. The telephone call dealt with the latest developments in south Lebanon and deadlocking the peace process.

Within this framework, Cook expressed his hope that all the sides should practice self-control to prevent more escalation and revive the peace process on the Syrian and Lebanese tracks.

Al-Sharaa asserted that Israel is responsible for military escalation, especially recently attacking the infrastructure in Lebanon and its withdrawal on Friday from the meeting of April Understanding Monitoring Committee. Such a move aims at creating more tension in the region, he said.

Al-Sharaa affirmed that Israel continued to practice power politics, and this will never achieve any results, he continued, but it will cause more material and human casualties and undermine any possible chances to achieve peace in the region.

Al-Sharaa added that some mass media circles are turning facts upside-down when they portray the aggressor as if it was the victim and portray those who are defending their land as if they were aggressors.
