New Personal Status Law, compliant with Sharia
Egypt, Politics, 2/10/2000

Egypt's First Lady Suzanne Mubarak said Wednesday that the long-awaited Alexandria library would come into existence by the end of the year.

In an interview with the French magazine Paris Match Thursday edition, Mrs. Mubarak said that the library would be a think tank and "a cultural bastion" that houses the latest editions and research papers in all fields of technology.

"The project got delayed because of antiquities discovered during the digging process," she explained.

First Lady Mubarak said that the Egyptians have become well-aware of the importance of reading and that the government is setting up more libraries.

Mrs. Mubarak is sponsoring "the Reading for All", a program aimed at making books in different branches of knowledge available at reasonable prices throughout Egypt.

Asked about controversy over the newly-approved Personal Status Law, she said that the law aims at protecting the Egyptian family, stressing that it is compliant with shariaa (Islamic law).

She said that Egyptian women have become more involved in international conferences and activities. "This serves as an indication of the progress achieved by Egyptian women," she told the magazine.

"The situation is now much better in Egypt with regard to women's health, awareness and protection against violence."

First Lady Mubarak said that her real comfort lies in her family life when the members of the family come together every evening.
