Two Moroccan parties call for constructive debate over women integration plan
Morocco, Culture, 2/10/2000

Two Moroccan parties, the nationalist Istiqlal party and the leftist Party for Progress and Socialism, have called for a constructive debate over women integration plan.

Istiqlal leader Abbas Al Fassi appealed to all concerned parties to open a constructive dialogue over the plan and said the plan's supporters should not call opponents as obscurantists while the plan opponents should not label supporters atheists.

The proposed amendments to the personal status have stirred the anger of Moroccan conservatives who argue proposals to change some legal provisions do not conform to Islam.

PPS called, in a communique of its political bureau, for a transparent and mature debate, considering that the plan's approach represents, in its legal provisions, a praiseworthy effort of reflection encouraged by our religion.

It also underlined that the ideas contained in the plan, take into consideration both the evolution and the renewed needs of the society, and the Islamic basic principle of jurisprudence.
