Arab, worldwide condemnation of Israeli aggressions against Lebanon
Lebanon-International, Politics, 2/10/2000

Arab League Secretary General Esmat Abdul Meguid has strongly condemned the Israeli aggression against Lebanon which resulted in killing several innocent people and destroyed Lebanese infrastructure and service utilities.

In a statement issued in Cairo, the AL chief said Israel's crime against Lebanon is a dangerous escalation of the continuous Israeli attacks against Lebanon, and a pretext to hide its failure before the Lebanese resistance which carried out its legitimate right to resist the Israeli occupation.

Meanwhile, the Organization of the Islamic Conference condemned the new Israeli aggression against the Lebanese territories. OIC Secretary General Azzedine Laraki stated that the Israeli attacks represent Israel's real intention to undermine the peace process.

The OIC secretary general called on the international community to condemn Israel and force it to stop its attacks against unarmed civilians.

On the other hand, the central committee of the Palestine national liberation movement strongly condemned Israel's attacks against Lebanon. In a statement the Palestinian movement said the recent Israeli aggression against Lebanon is a new crime to be added to Israel's incessant acts of genocide and aggressions carried out since the establishment of Israeli fifty years ago.

For its part, Iran has strongly denounced the Israeli attacks against Lebanon. The spokesman of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Hamid Rida Asefi, called on the international community to adopt a serious and practical stance against the Israeli acts.

The Egyptian ambassador to Israel, Muhammad Bassiouni said that the aggression is totally unacceptable, stressing his country's strong opposition to using force. In a statement broadcast by the Israeli radio on Tuesday Bassiouni called for exerting all efforts to eliminate tension in south Lebanon.

France also condemned Israel's air raids on Lebanon and called for the emergency meeting of the five-nation April Understanding monitoring group to discuss the latest violence on the last active Arab-Israeli war front.

The spokeswoman of the French Foreign Ministry, Anne Gizeau-Secret, said the bombing of the three power stations in Lebanon was "a serious violation of the 1996 understanding which precisely aims at protecting civilians."

In a statement issued from Riyadh where French Foreign Minister Hubert Vedrine is on a visit, Gizeau-Secret added that France "requests that the monitoring group meet as soon as possible."

Russia, on the other hand, has expressed its concern over the escalation of violence in southern Lebanon on Tuesday and warned the parties not to let the situation get out of control.

In a statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry said, "Moscow is concerned about the escalation of tensions in the Israeli Lebanon areas," adding, "At stake is a new outbreak of violence, fraught with sharp aggravation of the situation and a loss of control over events."
