Syrian FM talks on the telephone with Lebanese premier, Iranian and Jordanian FMs
Syria-Lebanon, Politics, 2/9/2000

Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa on Tuesday spoke on the telephone with Lebanese Premier and Foreign Minister Salim al-Hoss. The two men exchanged views and information on the Israeli aggressions against Lebanese civilian targets and the human and material losses inflicted in various areas in Lebanon.

They denounced Israel for flagrant violations of the April Understanding and called for convening an urgent and special meeting of the April Understanding Monitoring Committee to enable the rotating US- French presidency of this committee to deal with this serious development which they said intends to damage civilians and eliminate the already blocked peace process due to the Israeli intransigence.

Due to the fact that the Syrian and Lebanese sides are members of the April Understanding committee and based on their desire to save civilians on the two sides of the borders any human and material loses, the two sides called on the US and France to notify the Israeli government of the need for total abidance by the terms of the April Understanding and to stop its aggressive acts and military escalation to protect civilians and safeguard the peace process.

Al-Sharaa also received a telephone call from Iran's foreign minister, Kamal Kharazi. Talks dealt with current developments in the region and the Israeli aggression against Lebanon. The two ministers held Israel responsible for the military escalation and the violation of the terms of the April Understanding.

Earlier in the day, al-Sharaa received a telephone call from Jordanian Foreign Minister Abdul Illah al-Khatib. Talks dealt with the Middle East peace process developments and the Israeli aggressions against Lebanon.

Al-Sharaa expressed thanks for Jordan's concern and stressed that Israel is completely responsible for its aggressions against Lebanon, violation of the April Understanding and undermining the peace process.
