Kuwaiti women's association calls on women to demonstrate
Kuwait, Politics, 2/8/2000
A women's society on Monday called on the Kuwaiti women to take part in a massive move to be held today in front of voters registration headquarters in the downtown of the capital in order to demand their registration in the records of the Nation's Council (parliament) elections for the year 2003.
The chairperson of the women's social and cultural society, Sheikha al-Nasf, has urged the Kuwaiti women to attend there in order "to work for ensuring women's rights in the records of the voters."
Last Tuesday a number of women and men headed for six municipal districts, calling upon their officials to register the names of women in the formal records at the Ministry of the Interior, but their attempt was doomed to failure.
The Kuwaiti Nation's Council refused in November 1999 to offer women the right to vote and participate as candidates in contradiction to an Emiri decision released by the Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Jaber al-Ahmad al-Sabah, offering the Kuwaiti women all political rights as from the year 2003.
