Moratinos: No peace in region without Israel's full pullout from the Golan
Regional-European Union, Politics, 2/8/2000

The European Union's Middle East peace process special envoy, Miguel Angel Moratinos, has stated that peace in the Middle East is not attainable unless Israel totally withdraws from the Golan.

In an interview with the AFP on Monday, the EU Middle East peace envoy added that the Americans and the Europeans continued to make efforts with the objective of resuming negotiations between Israel and Syria. He added that he will be in Israel on Monday and two weeks later in Damascus, asserting that moves must be carried out to reach a solution in the Middle East, especially as Syrian President Hafez al-Assad has advocated peace as Syria's strategic option and when Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak showed determination to make peace.

Moratinos remarked that there is no peace without Israel's pullout from the Golan, saying that though there is an obstacle, Syria and Israel have only to make an agreement on border demarcation and security arrangements.

On the escalation of conditions in south Lebanon, the EU envoy once again called on the conflicting parties to resort to self- restraint, stressing that peace cannot be established without resorting to political means. He, at the same time, acknowledged the right of the Lebanese resistance to defend their country.
