Moussa conveys message from Mubarak to al-Assad
Syria-Egypt, Politics, 2/8/2000

Syrian President Hafez al-Assad received Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa on Monday at the Damascus al-Chaab palace.

The meeting was attended by Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa and the Egyptian ambassador in Damascus. Moussa conveyed to President al-Assad a message from Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

Discussions dealt with the general situation in the region, its current moves, the stalemate reached in the Middle East peace process and current contacts concerning it.

Talks also dealt with inter-Arab conditions.

Earlier in the day, al-Sharaa and Moussa discussed in their meeting the developments of the Middle East peace process, the current Arab situation and means of promoting joint Arab action.

The Egyptian foreign minister described his talks with al-Sharaa as fruitful and positive in connection to Arab conditions and inter Arab coordination, in regard to the Middle East peace process and the importance of giving it a push forward and eliminating numerous obstacles on various tracks.

In a statement to journalists on Monday, Moussa continued that discussions he had held with President al-Assad and al-Sharaa dealt with the Syrian, Lebanese and Palestinian tracks, the Israeli policy towards these tracks, the state of lacking confidence in the region concerning the peace process, the deadlock on the Syrian and Lebanese tracks and the clear condition of hesitation on the Palestinian track.

Answering a question on the meeting between President Mubarak and Barak and whether their talks were relayed to the Syrian side, the Egyptian foreign minister said: "It is natural to convey our impressions and to work for reactivating and revitalizing the Syrian track. Hopefully, we will be able to move, But this requires great changes in the Israeli policy towards peace tracks."

Asked if he is carrying a message from President Mubarak Moussa said, "Of course, and it is connected to the same issue."

Replying to a question on convening an Arab summit conference, Moussa said: "We are talking about Arab coordination and consultation as much as we talk about Arab summit, which will be hopefully held."

Moussa continued: "Until such a summit is convened there should be Arab cooperation and understanding, especially before the big exclamation marks connecting to the reality of the current Israeli policy towards various tracks." Later in the day, Moussa left Damascus following a short visit to Syria and was seen off at the airport by al-Sharaa, high ranking Foreign Ministry officials in Syria and the Egyptian ambassador in Damascus.
