Report: Barak proposes a new formula on border issue with Syria
Syria-Israel, Politics, 2/8/2000

The Kuwaiti daily al-Rai al-Am has quoted well-informed sources in Jerusalem as saying on Monday that Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak has conveyed to the US administration a new formula concerning the question of borders with Syria in an attempt made to resume Syrian- Israeli negotiations.

The sources added, quoting political circles in Tel Aviv, that the new formula is more detailed than what had been proposed previously, but it does not have a precise description of the border lines or mention of the June 4, 1967 border lines.

The sources said that Israeli Minister of Tourism Amnon Shahak had conveyed these proposals of Barak to the US administration and that Shahak made unofficial talks on Friday in Geneva with Syrian and American officials on resuming the negotiations.

The sources indicated that the Syrians have not yet answered Barak's proposal concerning halting tension in south Lebanon and resuming the negotiations.
