The first general federation of women established in Egypt
Egypt, Politics, 2/7/2000
Thirty Egyptian women's organizations have decided to establish the first women's federation in the country with the objective of protecting and defending women's rights and debating her causes before the public opinion.
A meeting was held at the headquarters of the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights, attended by 70 women representing various women's aggregations and commissions, agreed to announce the declaration of the federation officially and decided to establish preliminary committees in order to prepare constituent documents to submit them to administrative authorities concerned.
This meeting came just 48 hours after the issuance of the new "personal civil law" which was also ratified by President Hosni Mubarak. The law was considered by many people a victory for the Egyptian women.
