Ankara: Damascus has committed itself to Adanah agreement
Syria-Turkey, Politics, 2/7/2000
Turkish Minister of Sate Merza Oglo has told the Turkish English-language daily Turkish Daily News that his country is pleased with Syria's adherence to items of the Adanah agreement signed in October 1998 and that the agreement was a turning point in the relations between the two neighboring states.
Merza Oglo who was the first Turkish minister to visit Syria in five years was told by the staff of the Turkish embassy in Damascus upon his arrival in Damascus last month that the Syrian side is committed to the items of the agreement which is basically linked to fighting terrorism and not to permit any activities of the Kurdistani Workers Party (PKK) and that there was no need to raise this issue during that visit (Oglo's visit to Damascus in February 2000), a visit during which the two countries found out they share common views regarding main issues.
The Turkish minister also said that the Syrians "have not raised the question of the Turkish-Israeli relations during the talks" because the Syrians "might have become convinced" that the military agreements between Ankara and Israel were not of a threatening nature.
Oglo stressed that Syria is a sisterly country and that it is natural to have excellent relations between the two countries.
