US official impressed by ongoing reforms in Morocco

US assistant secretary for the Middle East and North Africa, Edward Walker, who paid a visit to Morocco this Feb.4-5 said he was very impressed by ongoing political and economic reforms in Morocco.

The US official, who was received on Friday by King Mohammed VI and met with premier Abderrahmane Youssoufi and foreign minister Mohamed Benaissa, said he was very impressed by the commitment of the king and the government to carry on democratic reforms.

Before leaving the Casablanca airport this morning, Walker also stressed that Morocco is on the right path regarding economic reforms, establishment of the rule of law, consolidation of human rights and democracy. The US administration is ready to help Morocco in these realms, he said.

He also announced that a meeting is slated next May in Washington to reactivate the Maghreb-Europe Eizenstat initiative and that the USA is preparing a concrete project for next year. The USA is planning to examine international investment opportunities in Morocco, encourage US companies to invest and help Morocco in its economic reforms drives, he elaborated.

He added that his country appreciates Morocco's positive role in the middle east peace process, and that Morocco and the USA share the same goal and want to bring to the region prosperity, stability and democracy.
