Belgium Contributes to Drinking Water Project in Morocco

Belgium has extended 130 million Belgian francs ($ 3.42 mln) to support a drinking water supply project to Moroccan southwestern rural areas.
The agreement was signed on Friday by visiting Belgian foreign minister, Louis Michel, and Moroccan minister of foreign affairs and cooperation, Mohamed Benaissa.
The project is estimated to cost $ 6.42 million to which Morocco contributed $ 3 million.
The drinking water supply to rural areas program, known by its acronym in French "PAGER," targets 31,000 water points that will give access to drinking water to 11 million inhabitants. It projects to cover 80% of rural population by 2003.
Since the program was initiated in 1995, 2.03 million persons were provided with drinking water. PAGER is Estimated to cost a total of one billion US dollars, to which the state budget and local councils will contribute 55%, the rest being financed by international loans or donations.
So far it received $ 50 million in donations and $ 46 million worth of loans, including $ 18 million by the Kuwaiti Fund of Arab Economic Development.
