Government to submit women integration plan to king if no agreement is reached
Morocco, Politics, 2/4/2000

If no agreement is reached on legal provisions of women's integration to development plan, the government said Thursday it will submit the matter to King Mohammed VI.

Spokesman of the government, Khalid Alioua, said the government does not accept any deviation which may divide the society and denounced practices which tend to "exploit this question for purposes other than those for which the plan is destined."

The proposed amendments to the personal status have stirred the anger of Moroccan conservatives who argued that it does not conform to Islam.

The plan is "a governmental project submitted to different political, social and cultural actors," Alioua said, underlining that the government's policy in this respect is "coherent."
