Moroccan-Mauritanian parliamentary group set up
Morocco-Mauritania, Politics, 2/4/2000
The chamber of advisors, upper house of the Moroccan parliament, and the Mauritanian senate agreed to set up a group of friendship and brotherhood as a frame of fruitful dialogue and consultation between the two chambers' members.
The announcement came in the joint statement released Thursday at the end of the four-day work visit to Mauritania by the speaker of the chamber of advisors, Jalal Essaid, and during which he conferred with President Mouaouiyia Ould Sidi Ahmed Tayaa.
The group will work to consolidate political, economic, cultural and legislative cooperation between the two states, the statement said.
The two sides agreed to exchange visits between MPs and to trade experience and documents and voiced hope that the coming meeting of the Moroccan-Mauritanian high joint commission would contribute to expanding the scope of bilateral cooperation to the sectors of maritime fisheries, telecommunication, transport and agriculture.
The possibility of setting up a joint chamber of commerce and measures to increase trade exchange were discussed at meetings between the Moroccan delegation and Mauritanian businessmen.
Talks also covered the building of the Arab Maghreb Union (UMA), deemed by the two sides as a strategic choice. They expressed hope that the UMA bodies will hold meetings shortly to give a new momentum to the union, in line with the principles of neighborliness and mutual respect.
The UMA set up in Marrakesh in 1989 by Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and tunisia, has been paralyzed for years due to strained relations between Morocco and Algeria over Algiers' direct involvement in the Sahara issue.
