El-Merghany: Procedures to prepare reconciliation atmosphere go slowly in Sudan
Sudan-Egypt, Politics, 2/4/2000

Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa met yesterday with Mohamed Ossman El-Merghany, head of the opposition Sudanese Democratic National Alliance, in the attendance of Mostafa El-Feki, the assistant foreign minister for Arab affairs, and Rafik Khalil, manager of Sudan's administration.

Following the meeting, El-Mergahany said that the meeting is considered an extension of the continuous discussions concerning the Sudanese issue and that he conveyed to Moussa the point of view of the opposition alliance's members toward convening a preliminary meeting in Cairo before the comprehensive discussion conference between the government and opposition.

He said that all parties that belong to the alliance welcome convening this preliminary meeting, asserting that he connected with El-Sadek El-Mahdi, chief of the Sudanese Ummah Party, and that he participated with his representatives in the meetings recently held by the alliance, denying any dispute with El-Mahdi. He said he is in touch will all the opposition parties, whether in the south or north.

El-Merghany also said Moussa informed him of the coordination between the Egyptian - Libyan and IGAD initiatives and that President Ismael Omar Guelleh of Djibouti, the current head of IGAD, spoke with President Mubarak concerning this matter.
