Sudanese president calls on Garang to join the peace process
Sudan-North Africa, Politics, 2/4/2000

The Sudanese news agency said on Wednesday that Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir called on the Sudan People's Liberation Army (the south Sudan rebel movement) to join the peace process.

Meanwhile, news reports from southern Sudan said that 50 persons were killed this week in confrontations between the rebels and the Bedouins in the southeastern part of the country.

The agency quoted al-Bashir as saying in a speech he read on Tuesday in the city of Wau (the second-largest city in Sudan), "Let's make this year a year of peace and progress." He called on the rebels of southern Sudan to "respond to the calls for establishing peace through taking part in rebuilding and developing a new Sudan."

The Sudanese president visited Wau city on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of establishing the Sudanese women's federation (which is pro-government). He said this celebration reflects "the unity of all Sudan."

On Thursday the Sudanese president headed for N'Djamena, Chad, to take part in the second summit conference for presidents of the countries of the group of the coastal states and the African desert, according to Sudanese presidency sources. The summit will be held on Friday and Saturday in Chad's capital.

Tthe group of the Sahel-Saharan states, which includes Sudan, Chad, Burkina Faso, the Central Africa Republic, Eritrea, Libya, Mali and Niger, was established in February 1998.

Sudanese Foreign Minister Mustafa Othman Ismael left Khartoum on Wednesday for N'Djamena to take part in the preliminary ministerial meeting of the summit, according to a news report from his office.
