Conference on Somali reconciliation in Djibouti
Somalia-Djibouti, Politics, 2/4/2000

Political sources have asserted that a reconciliation conference will be held between the warring Somali factions within the few coming weeks, under the auspices of Djibouti's President Ismail Omar Guelleh.

However, several conferences had preceded this newly declared conference. Three conferences on this matter were held in Djibouti, Addis Ababa and Cairo, and all of these conferences ended in failure due to several reasons.

The circles urged personalities who advocate such initiatives for reconciliation in Somalia to find the correct ground for the Somali reconciliation through taking into account expanding the base of participants in this conference to cover men of religion, scholars, intellectuals, politicians, and the sheikhs of the tribes-- not only heads of the warring factions or their deputies-- as well as to preserve the role of the honest brokers and not to be aligned to a certain side at the expense of the other.

These circles also called on countries and organizations, the owners of the peace efforts, to reconsider their policies towards the Somali districts which enjoy security stability and provide these districts with proper aid so as to ensure these districts' stability, and, above all, to stand against all who try to obstruct the good offices for reconciliation in Somalia.
