Bouteflika assures the surrender of 6,000 armed Islamic militants
Algeria, Politics, 2/3/2000
Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika said that 6,000 members of the Armed Islamic Group have surrendered according to the pardon conditions, which ended two weeks ago.
These extremists who gave themselves and their weapons up and have not committed rape, killings or violent operations were granted a partial pardon by the courts.
The pardon is the cornerstone of President Bouteflika's plan for ending the civil war in Algeria, due to which 100,000 persons have been killed in the past eight years.
