UAE, France conduct joint exercises

The United Arab Emirates UAE and France on Wednesday started joint military exercises in the UAE desert in what is considered the largest joint maneuvers between the two countries since 1991.
The UAE news agency, WAM, said that chief of staff of the UAE armed forces, Sheikh Muhammad Bin Zayed al-Nahyan, described the maneuvers, dubbed Gulf 2000,which will continue until February 10 with the participation of air and sea vessels from the two countries as the largest in terms of their volume and plans. He added that the aim of these maneuvers is to increase the fighting efficiency and effectiveness of cooperation between the participating forces.
France is taking part in this maneuvers with 5,500 soldiers, 30 planes and the aircraft carrier Fouche, as well as three warships, one submarine, tanks and artillery.
A French spokesman said that it was decided that some of the French troops will move towards Oman, Qatar and Kuwait to carry out limited joint maneuvers there.
