Second Egyptian satellite to be launched in July
Egypt, Business, 2/2/2000
It was decided to launch the second Egyptian satellite, Nilesat 102 into space through the European company Arianespace from its Kourou, French Guinea base in South America in July 2000 after finishing all the necessary tests before releasing this satellite into space.
Built by Matra Marconi Space, Nilesat 102 will weigh about 1,800 kg (3,960 lb) at launch, and will be positioned at 7 degrees West, over the Gulf of Guinea. It will be equipped with 12 Ku-band transponders and a transmission antenna with a 2-3 meter (7,5 ft) diameter reflector. Covering a zone from Morocco to the Arab Gulf states, Nilesat 102 will offer a direct-to-home transmission capacity of more than 100 digital TV channels.
Nilesat 101, also built by Matra Marconi Space, was launched by Arianespace on Flight 108, on April 28, 1998.
Three protocols were signed for hiring channels of this satellite with al-Jazeera Qatari news channel and a Lebanese company seeking to broadcast many specialized channels in addition to broadcasting an Arab shopping channel through the Egyptian satellite.
