Mauritania-Morocco, Politics, 2/1/2000

President of Mauritania, Mouaouiyia Ould Sidi Ahmed Taya, received in Nouakchott on Monday the speaker of the chamber of advisors (upper house of the Moroccan parliament), Jalal Essaid, who started Sunday a four-day working visit to Mauritania heading a parliamentary delegation.

Essaid conveyed to the Mauritanian head of state the greetings of King Mohammed VI and his consideration for the steps covered by Mauritania in democratization and development, a statement by the chamber of advisors said.

President Taya expressed appreciation for the visit, the first by a Moroccan parliamentary delegation in Mauritania to get informed about the democratic experience in the country, and entrusted the house speaker with conveying to King Mohammed VI his "brotherly greetings" and his "consideration for the sovereign's wise policy," the statement said.

The Moroccan delegation will confer with several Mauritanian officials and MPs on means to consolidate common action, and promote cooperation between legislative branches at the bilateral and Maghreban levels.

Morocco and Mauritania are both members of the Arab Maghreb Union that also musters Algeria, Libya and Tunisia.
