Syrian daily accuses the Zionist movement of being involved in the holocaust
Syria-Israel, Politics, 2/1/2000
In its Monday editorial written by the chief editor, Muhammad Khair al-Wadi, the state-run official Tishreen Arabic daily asserted that there is a "Zionist exaggeration" of the holocaust carried out against the Jews in Europe by the Nazis. He accused several leaders of the Zionist movement of "collaborating with the Nazis to escalate the Jewish problem," saying there have been attempts made by Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak's government to "burn" the chances of achieving peace.
Tishreen's chief editor said: "The Nazis war claimed the lives of more than 50 million people during the second world war, including Russians, Polish, French and Italians and others, but Zionism demolishes from the memory the blood of all those victims and only gives attention on the sufferings of the Jews during the time of the war, despite the fact that historical facts confirm that the Zionists collaborated with the Nazis to escalate the Jewish problem. Besides many Zionist leaders carried out direct killing and terrorist acts to push the Jews to migrate to Palestine, of course in direct cooperation with leaders of the German Nazis."
This comes at a time when peace negotiations between Barak and Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa are witnessing a stalemate following a round of negotiations in the US town of Shepherdstown in January, 1999.
Al-Wadi added, "Zionism hides the dark pages in its black history and fabricates stories on the Nazi holocaust the Jews underwent and magnifies these stories to reach records," asserting that this is not only intended to forge historical facts but is also an attempt made by the Zionist organizations to put life into a distorted vision of history and usting that in deceiving the world public opinion and then blackmailing it.
After questioning the reasons behind the "Zionist persistence" to remind of "the holocaust policy," the Syrian paper reported that "Israel and the Zionist organizations seek to achieve two objectives, firstly to get more money from Germany and the European states and establishment and secondly to invest the myth of the holocaust as a sword directed to the necks of those who stand against Zionism or in the face of its expansionist and aggressive schemes, people as such will be accused of being anti-Semitic."
The Syrian paper concluded by saying that "if such a condemned Nazi reaction was covered by history, the Zionist terrorist acts are still active in its peak, as Israel has practiced the policy of the holocaust in the occupied Golan, Palestine and south Lebanon and Israel now seems ready to burn any chance for establishing a just and comprehensive peace."
