US 6th fleet to station in the Mediterranean
Turkey-USA, Politics, 2/1/2000

The Turkish daily Hurriyet said on Monday, quoting a high-ranking Turkish official, that the US 6th fleet intends to station in the Mediterranean, adding that this Turkish official expressed his country's welcome to the fleet when it arrives at Iskandaroun port.

One official at Iskandaroun port, Polent Qousaq, said that to have 50,000 US soldiers stationed in a base near Iskandaroun will help to revive the economy in this area.

The paper indicated that just 30 years ago Turkish students carried out violent demonstrations against the arrival of the same fleet in the Turkish city of Istanbul.

The paper claimed that the people of Iskandaroun say that conditions have changed since then.
