Regional, Science, 1/31/2000
The first Indian hi-tech chip 'MANAS' will be fitted in the prestigious international Large Hadron Collider, being built at Geneva-based European Center of nuclear Reserach (CERN), a center spokesperson, Hans Gutbrod, has said, reported the Indian News agency PTI.
The chip, made at Chandigarh-based Semiconductor Laboratory, will be the first such Indian technology for international collaboration, Gutbord said last week after the first session of an international collaboration meeting on dimuon spectrometer at the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics (SINP).
Lauding Indian scientists for their "substantial" contribution to the international collaboration project with inputs from a consortium of countries like France, Italy, Germany, Britain, Switzerland, Russia and Belarus, Gutbord said that MANAS-16 (Multiplex Analog Signal-processor) will also open up avenues in neuro-chips and intelligent robotics.
India is participating in the project on an equal partner basis for building the collider's accelerator and the experiments, Gutbord, also director of Laboratoire de physique subatomique et des technologies associees (Subatech) in Nantes, France, said.
