Minister urges US to use investment opportunities in Morocco
Morocco-USA, Economics, 1/31/2000

Minister of industry, commerce and handicraft Alami Tazi urged the United States to make use of investment opportunities in Morocco.

Tazi told visiting US deputy secretary of commerce Robert Mallett that investment and trade exchanges have been on the rise but more could be achieved if the American side seized the incentives now offered by the kingdom.

Mallett underscored his country's determination to enhance trade with Morocco and recalled how important the Eizenstat initiative was for partnership between the US and Maghreb countries.

Bilateral trade has been on the increase from $ 650 million in 1997 to $ 800 million in 1998. Exports to the US are mainly phosphate products, canned fish, clothing and shoe wear.

Imports consist mainly of wheat, tobacco and electric appliances.

Investments have recorded major hikes from $ 5 million in 1990 to $ 55 million in 1994 to $ 350 million dhs in 1997 making of the United States the second investor in Morocco.
