Egypt seeks fostering inter-Arab solidarity, cooperation
Egypt-Regional, Politics, 1/31/2000
President Hosni Mubarak's Political Advisor Osama el-Baz underlined Saturday that Egypt will work, after reaching a peace settlement in the Middle East, for setting up a better system for cooperation among Arab states.
"The projected system would prevent any aggression on Arab countries," el-Baz said during the meeting held on the sidelines of the 32nd Cairo International Book Fair. He asserted that Egypt will call upon Turkey, after realizing peace in the Middle East, to reconsider its alliance with Israel and will also work for freeing the Middle East from all weapons of mass destruction.
On reports that the Gulf states, Syria, Jordan, Palestine and Lebanon would become closer to Israel after the realization of aspired for settlement, Baz voiced his belief that these countries would adopt the Egyptian pattern in dealing with Israel.
He underlined that Egypt is still playing a vital role in the Middle East peacemaking drive and has not abandoned the Palestinian cause even after signing a peace agreement with Israel.
On the latest development in peace talks on the Syrian track, el-Baz pointed that the Syrian stance is based on international legitimacy, the UN Security Council Resolutions 242 and 338 as well as the "land-for-peace" formula.
"We are sure that when Syria restores its rights it would not abandon other Arab rights," he indicated.
