UAE president voices backing for Syria
United Arab Emirates-Syria, Politics, 1/31/2000
United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan al-Nahyan on Sunday stressed his country's support for Syria's stand and its just demand of Israel's withdrawal from the occupied Golan, south Lebanon and western Bekaa.
In a speech read by Sheikh Sultan Bin Zayed al-Nahyan on behalf of the UAE president at the opening ceremony of the 21st legislative team, Sheikh Zayed stated that a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East cannot be achieved unless Israel unconditionally implements UN resolutions, especially those which call for Israel's withdrawal from all occupied Arab lands, foremost of which is the holy city of Jerusalem.
The UAE president said that the UAE together with the Arab Gulf Cooperation Council member states have expressed their strong concern over the growing proliferation of weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East. He asserted his country's call to make this region, including the Gulf area, free of all kinds of weapons of mass destruction, the Gulf News Agency reported.
The UAE president continued that the civilization challenges and the dangers facing the Arab states' interests necessitate relentless efforts to bring the Arab ranks closer in order to reactivate a unified Arab stand in the service of the Arab states' interests and causes.
Sheikh Zayed commended the decision taken by the Arab Gulf Cooperation Council member states, which calls for the formation of a tripartite ministerial committee to work out a mechanism for starting serious talks between the UAE and Iran in order to solve, peacefully, the issue of the three islands Lesser Tanb, Greater Tanb and Abu Mousa.
He confirmed his country's adherence to and desire for Iraq's independence, integrity and national sovereignty.
