Indian information minister in Syria
Syria-India, Economics, 1/31/2000

Indian minister of information Aroun Jeitli arrived in Damascus ended a three-day official visit to Syria.

In an arrival statement on Friday at the airport, where he was welcomed by his Syrian Minister Muhammad Salman, the visiting minister expressed his country's appreciation for "President al-Assad's stances and Syria's achievements and great steps realized in the context of building up and modernization," voicing his country's full backing for Syria's stances and its right to restore its rights and lands.

The Indian minister also indicated the deep ties of friendship and cooperation relations between the two countries. He said his visit will pave the way for continuing information cooperation and agreements signed between the two sides. He continued that this visit is an opportunity to discuss matters relating to mutual interests and other issues of concern to the two sides.

On Sunday, Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa met with Indian Minister of Information Aroun Jaitly. Talks dealt with developments in the region and the Middle East peace process. Views were exchanged on current developments in Southeast Asia.

Later in the day, the Indian minister left Damascus following a three-day visit to Syria.

In a pre-departure statement to SANA, the Indian minister expressed his happiness to visit Syria. He added that meetings with Syrian officials were successful, sensitive and based on a common ground of cooperation between the two countries, especially in the field of information.

He added that cooperation protocols were signed between the two countries' radio stations and news agencies in Syria and India. He continued, "It was also agreed to exchange expertise and advanced technological systems in the area of information and to maintain mutual cooperation in cultural and filmmaking areas." He hoped that the next meeting of the Syrian- Indian information committee will be in New Delhi. The committee will evaluate and review what has been implemented of these agreements and prospects of developing them.

The Indian minister also renewed his country's stand in support of Syria's right to restore the whole of the Golan. He also asserted his country's backing to the realization of a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East based on concerned UN resolutions.
