Red Cross warns of negative effects of sanctions against Iraq
Iraq-International, Health, 1/29/2000
The International Committee of the Red Cross warned of an accumulation of negative effects from the system of sanctions imposed on Iraq and its serious effects on the country.
A report issued by the committee recently-- parts of which were published in Cairo-- said Iraq would need a long time to rehabilitate the basic sectors to become like it used to be before 1990.
The report added that the severe shortage in food caused harm to a whole generation of Iraqi children and that nearly 4 million persons are suffering from malnutrition, including 2.4 million children under the age of 5 and 600 pregnant women, as well as thousands of aged people.
