Conference for Somali reconciliation in Djibouti in April
Regional-Somalia, Politics, 1/29/2000
A statement issued by Djibouti's embassy in Cairo asserted that a reconciliation conference among the conflicted factions in Somalia will be held in Djibouti during April with the participation of 1,500 Somali persons and under the auspices of the Arab League, Egypt and Sudan.
This statement was issued at the end of Djiboutian President Ismail Omar Guellah's visit to Cairo on Thursday. The statement said the representatives of the battling Somali militias who declare their acceptance of the Djibouti initiative supported by UN, the Organization of African Unity and the Arab League will participate in this conference.
The Djibouti initiative depends on three elements: establishing a democratic civil society in Somali, establishing a unified police body under international supervision and forming a national council paving the way for holding local elections and achieving the reconciliation between southern and northern Somalia to maintain its unity.
