French delegation visits eastern Morocco
Morocco-France, Economics, 1/27/2000

A French delegation is visiting this Thursday and Friday eastern Morocco to probe means of giving a new momentum to the region economic, social and cultural development.

The delegation, led by vice-speaker of the Senate, Jean Faure, and including the former minister and mayor of Beaurepaire, Christian Nucci, will hold meetings with local authorities, elected representatives, economic operators and representatives of the civil society on local development.

Field visits to projects financed by the French development agency are also scheduled. Water supply, sanitation, and housing are among the fields covered by these projects.

The visit will be crowned by the signing of a convention between the general council of French region of Isere and the Moroccan agency for the development of the northern provinces.

In parallel to this visit, the French embassy in Rabat will transfer during these two days all of its services to the eastern city of Oujda.

The move is meant to express French backing to Morocco's territorial planning policy and to renew the priority that French cooperation grants to the northern provinces, a statement by the French embassy said.

The development of these provinces was discussed at a series of recent meetings in Rabat between the Moroccan minister of the interior, Ahmed Midaoui, and the secretary of state for the interior, Fouad Ali El-Himma, and France's ambassador to Morocco, Michel De Bonnecorse.
