Regional, Politics, 1/27/2000
The meetings of the technical committee assigned by the Arab League's council to draw up a regional draft treaty for making the Middle East a zone free of weapons of mass destruction started yesterday in the general trusteeship of the Arab League.
Nabil Meamari, the head of Lebanon's delegation to the meeting, said the discussions focused on examining the basic draft of the organization on the center of the proposed organization to be a mechanism to achieve supervision by the treaty's member states and fully committing to its items.
He added that the discussions in which a group of experts, diplomats and militants from all over the Arab states focused on the form of the mechanism, its headquarters, means of financing it and its tasks.
He also referred to the committee's role, which is technical and which he said needs to be accurate because its includes the organization's system which tackles converting the area to a zone free of all the weapons of mass destruction.
He said the committee is charged with making the proposed mechanism for this while taking into consideration the UN Security Council's reference.
