Education and schools Iraq under sanctions' effects
Iraq-UN, Education, 1/27/2000
Iraq's delegation in the regional Arab conference concerning "Education for everybody" asserted that the sanctions imposed on Iraq and obstruction of contracts under the oil-for-food program have caused severe harm to Iraq's educational corporations.
A report concerning education in Iraq presented by the delegation before the conference's session currently being held in Cairo said that building new schools to face the increase in the number of students stopped while problems persist in repairing and maintaining the existing school buildings.
The report stated that there is a need to repair 80% of Iraq's schools, even as schools face a severe lack of practical educational requirements like books, pens, notebooks and other educational tools.
